My first official act as Tech Admin was to clean out the user database. Aside from a few exceptions, all users that haven't posted in over one month have been deleted. If you know you are going to be away from the boards for one month or more, and wish your account to be saved PM me.

The following accounts have been deleted
Gorkye, HoboFarmer, o, im not a hippie, Ray Forrest, spacepirateslikeuranus, Elizabeth, BetterThanEthan, Kilgoretrout, Jelone?!, tommymag2, loudypants

The following accounts have exceeded the deadtime limit but still exist due to a precieved special status
Slinker, kingwangchops, spacep2, Sztev

Why not just delete old threads instead?   That's just not a very friendly way to keep users coming back.

Yeah, one month isn't a very long time. I think the deadline should be three months or something.

Well to be fair, Flyntz, most of those people probably hadn't posted in over three months either, so I don't see what difference it really makes.  Besides, its not like he banned the names or anything, just deleted them.  If the people really want to come back, then they most certainly can.  But I mean, its not like they were active posters anyway, or posters at all, so I don't think its really necessary to worry about alienating them.

This wasn't something I just up and decided to do either, I asked the overminds before I went ahead. They most certainly didn't tell me to leave Any accounts, the ones that are still there only are because they have special attribute tags, which again I wasn't told about.

Also, I did this a week ago, I posted the announcement as soon as I was done. If you're going to complain about something, waiting a week doesn't exactly do anything for your case

Most of the names listed there I had never heard of anyway, but I'm saying that it is definitely possible for someone to go a month without posting for whatever reason. I just wouldn't want to come back to find my account gone just because I had an extremely busy month or something.

I mean, you saved a few accounts, so if someone like me or Elmer were to go a month without posting, would we get the chop? We're clearly active members of the forum, so would we get the same special treatment?

Probally. The names I delete were names I haven't seen post in ages, if ever.

I'm just asking him to clarify. You're basically saying "We're deleting these ones... but not these ones." I just want to know where you draw the line. You're saying "We're deleting any account that has been inactive for a month, except for special cases." What are "special cases?"

I have no problem with what happened. As I said, I haven't even heard of most of those names, but I'm concerned about the future.

Flyntz, I think Evan addressed your issue in his initial announcement.

There was a very similiar policy on a web rpg Evan and I used to play.  If you were inactive for a certain number of days, then you were marked AWOL and had to contact your GM to be made active again.  Basically, its just a matter of if you THINK you might not be able to post for a month (which is a pretty large grace period in comparison, I mean even if you're really busy I'm sure you could find time to post at least once in that period) then let him know and you won't get removed.

I still hold the belief that this is dumb.

I agree.

I understand that storing names and accounts takes up space and therefore money, and I don't object to deleting accounts that have never been used, but if I get swamped with school work to the point that I can't post on the boards, do you really expect me to say "Oh, I'll e-mail Evan and tell him not to delete my account?" Or if my mom dies and I go into grief mode for a month, do you really expect me to remember to e-mail Evan?

Neither of these are very likely to happen, but my point is that if an extremely active member like me leaves for a month, chances are something unusual is up and Space Pirates, Ltd. is far down on my list of priorities, and I would plan on coming back and wouldn't like to have my account deleted.

The people that got saved were only saved because they have Admin rank, either they're overmind accounts or backups. Every account I deleted had a postcount lower than 15. If you go inactive for a month Flyntz, I won't touch the account because I figure you'll come back, but it's at least courteous to let someone know.

I understand the issue of courtesy, and if I know that I'll be away for a month, I'll certainly let you know. But I'm saying that chances are, if I'm gone for a month, it wouldn't have been a pre-planned thing.

But anyway, thank you.
