The rule with my family this year was to have a 30$ limit per person, which we all sorta broke :)

Given
To both parents:
- A huge bag of Pistachio nuts. They love 'em but their frugal ways prevents them from ever buying the nuts. After unwrapping it my dad cradled the baby-sized bag for a good 20 minutes :)
- Sugarfree Coffee Flavoring. Again, too expensive to indulge in but they love it, and given the amount of coffee they make, some variety will be nice.

To my mom I gave a pair of thick wool socks, The Julian Casablancas CD,  and an Andrea Bocelli CD

To my dad I gave the first season boxed set of Fringe, and will likely follow it up with the 2nd and 3rd season for his birthday

To my brother I gave a large bottle of Courvoisier, as well as a bulk box of 36 bags of skittles, which he had apparently was a recovering addict from :P

Received
From My Parents: A small saucepan (as requested), two scarves, the book "Tunnel in the Sky" by Robert Heinlien, two art books including 'Light and Color' by James Gurney, which I had been drooling over for months, a folding pocket knife, and a small bottle of The Glenlivet.

My brother though gave me first an Avatar Calendar, the jerk (He hassles me all the time about knowing Na'vi etc) the new Die Antwoord CD (lol) as well as a big bottle of fancy belgian beer, and best of all, an authentic, antique Stoneware Beer Stein from his time in Germany. This thing is the best, it was made in 1920, and its riddled with relief sculpture and german sayings (below) and it even has the metal cap on a hinge.

Mits, would you be so kind as to help translate the following?
"Jetzt gang i an's Brünnele trink aber net"
"Do such i'mein herztausige Schatz find'n aber net"

Edit: Turns out the text is Bavarian, and it means

On the side that faces me when I hold it: "Now I went to the fountain but didn't drink anything"
and on the side that faces others: "You're searching for my heart but can not find it"

Hope y'all had a happy holiday :)

"Jetzt gang i an's Brünnele trink aber net"
"Do such i'mein berztausige Schatz find'n aber net"

The sentences are in regional slang, my guess Swabian.  Since they rhyme it's possible that they're lyrics to a song.  Is the writing in Fraktur (the old-school German script)?  Because it's "herztausig."

"Now I went to the fountain, but drank nothing.
Seeking my lovely darling, but I didn't find her."

I gave Mark Twain's autobiography to my dad, and a coffee mug with the Great Seal of the USA to my mother.  I got tea, a Penn State decoration and moolah in return.  Successful Xmas :)

EDIT: after a quick Google search, it turns out it's a Swabian folk song.  The rest of the lyrics go like this:

Quote
Da laß i meine Äugelein um und um gehn
da sieh i mein herztausige Schatz

jetzt weiß i net, lebt mein Schatz,
oder ist er tot...

All of which translates as:

I looked around with my little eye
And spotted my lovely darling standing with another.

Ahhhh, seeing her standing with another hurts!
Now by God's hat (lol), lovely darling, I'll never see you again!

Now I'll buy myself some paper, ink and a quill,
and write a farewell letter to my lovely darling.

Now I'll never again lie on straw or moss,
for there are 3 little roses inside of me (rough translation).

And those 3 roses are blood-red,
Now I don't know if my darling lives,
or if she's dead.

Basically, you have a depressing beer mug, Bryce.  DRINK UP!  But seriously, that's gotta be a fucking cool gift to have.  I wish I had picked up some antique steins while I was over there.

Mein brüder sagt:

Quote
"You bet Bryce has a motherfucking sweet ass Stein. I got it at the Wedding antique Markt in Berlin. Fucking shit this shit is so ill, and it's BEAUTIFUL... like, je répété, il est BEAU

Danke schön
Spencer"

Thanks for the correct translation and the song! I must now find the tune, learn it, and sing it when I drink beer from it.

Gave:

Ben: iPad, as well as three sweaters, some comfy pants to lounge around the house, and socks.
Dad: Cool kitchen gadgets - a nice cherry pitter that lets you feed the cherries down into a little chute instead of the kind you have to do by hand, and a measuring cup with a digital scale attached to it for measuring by weight as opposed to volume.
Mom: $100.00 in Barnes & Noble gift cards for her new Nook.
Brother: Season Pass to Bear Creek Mountain.

Got:
Ben: 2 pairs of boots that I really wanted. One pair doesn't quite fit so I'll have to exchange them. Bummer.
Mom: Is gonna get us a new couch. Yay!

carly is rich.

Nah I'm not. My mom just got a really big settlement from a law suit she's been pursuing for like, five years. (Broke her foot, can't work anymore, lots of complications, blah blah blah) so she gave me 2000 bucks as a sort of pay back for money I've lent her over the years. Soooo I spent it all on Christmas presents.  Smiley

I really like that pride and prejudice shirt but they look like they are all made for super skinny girls and also 26 bucks only gets ONE book donated? Seems a little much for not a whole lot.

Hahahaha yeah that's Kate Beaton. She's the best. If I were into funny/ironic t-shirts like that, that would be the one I would buy.
