No webcomics allowed in this thread.

1. Non Sequitur
2. Get Fuzzy
3. Opus
4. Pearls Before Swine
5. Foxtrot

Numbers 2-4 are very very close, but 1 is definitely 1, and 5 is definitely 5.

Do they have to be comics in the newspaper now?

I made my list as if that rule applied; if it didn't, Calvin and Hobbes would have been in there somewhere, but do whatever you want.

Defidently is not a word.

But 3 fits into the 2-4 category, so that should answer your question.

I really did not expect those first two.

You never cease to amaze me, Nick.

For Better or Worse has the best art of any comic in the newspaper.   It also has a plot that I often find myself caring about and writing that can slip a black comedy joke in a strip about the family's dog dying.

Sally Forth is just good.   It's consistently funny and never relies on a cheap gag.

Get Fuzzy bothers me sometimes.   In a good amount of strips it is almost impossible to find the actual joke.   The cat's a jerk, I get it!

I don't think there is a distinct joke in Get Fuzzy a lot of the time. I think the situation is supposed to be funny, or the joke is located in an unconventional spot. It's not at all the build-up, build-up, punch line style comic that nearly every other one is.

I never thought For Better or For Worse was that well drawn. I think the "Best Art" award would go to Opus or Non Sequitur, but I guess that's all just opinion.

I can understand Non-Sequitor, but Opus??   It's so scribbly in unsubtle with whatever cliche or stereotype it's trying to rub in your face.

Both are pretty scribbly, really. I seem to like that style for whatever reason.

I just don't think this qualifies as good art:

Also, I don't know if I've ever gotten a laugh out of For Better or For Worse. I read it every week, and never a laugh. But, that's just a difference in sense of humor.

Do you just read the sunday strips?   The weekday strips are much better.

For Better or Worse's art is alot more dynamic than most comic strip art.   That is the main reason why I appreciate it.   Also, the writer had managed to make the characters realistically age for the entire run of the strip.

Yes, just the Sunday strips.

The whole aging thing is pretty cool. My 40-something year-old uncle was born in the same year as the youngest son from Family Circus.

And that bothers me.

Bump. Let's talk about comics some more.

Does anyone read that new comic Lio in the weekday editions of the Inquirer? It's pretty fantastic.

Also, there was a comic in the paper for about a week called Cow and Boy. I think it was in a contest to replace Foxtrot. It lost, sadly. But, I read it online now, and it's quite funny.

About a month ago I realized Foxtrot was no longer being printed.   What happened to it Flyntz, do you know?

Lio's a lot better than Sherman's Lagoon or whatever it's called, but you can only go so far with a "silent" strip.

The creator of Foxtrot decided to semi-retire: he's only doing the Sunday strip these days.

Sherman's Lagoon is awful. I don't know how that won over Cow and Boy.

Ted Forth, Sally Forth's husband, is one of my favorite newspaper comic characters.   He's fun and a Dad character without falling into the dumb "Oh Dad!" cliche most shows and comics have.

Over recent years he's been removed from his job (I forget if he was laid off or if he just quite spontaneously) and spent a lot of time just being around the house being a lot happier.   He often is seen hanging out playing video games with the daughter and joking around with Sally herself.

Most recently, he got a holiday job at a Toy Store and could not be happier.   He's really fucking endearing and I love a character who's childish and admirable at the same time:

Ted has also appeared in Shortpacked! the webcomic about toys:

FYI for everyone else - Dan and I got in an argument on the way back from Pittsburgh as to how many kids are in the family circus and had to call up David (he said 3 I said 5 so we were both wrong  Argh!).
