I'm not sure if there are any fans of the series on here besides myself but if there is, STILL avoid the new HP movie. It isn't worth whatever money you could spend on a ticket. See The Hangover AGAIN or something.

I must completely disagree, we even paid ridiculous prices ($11!) and I thought it was well worth the money. Especially if youre a fan of the books, it was super great to see the adaption on the big screen. The sets and attention to detail was beautiful.

And as Eamonn mentioned, hes never read a single book and pretty much hates post things Harry Potter and he came out of the movie liking it even more than I did.

No, its not a cinematic masterpiece, but its worth $10 to see it big.

I'm being factual!

The dude that plays Harry Potter came out as an atheist and the dude that plays Crabbe was convicted for running a pot farm.

Harry Potter came out as an atheist

What is this like being gay now? You "come out" of out the atheist closet?  Roll Eyes

Anyway, I hate Harry Potter pretty more than life itself and I thought the was movie was pretty good. Especially the parts for which I was awake. (Shut up, you say that sentence grammatically incorrect and see how stupid and awkward it sounds!) It definitely kept my interest - the sleeping was not the movie's fault, it's just what I do when I see movies in theatres anymore, I sleep - and I thought the acting and everything was pretty much way better than the other two that I've seen (Sorcerer's Stone and Goblet of Fire).

I really wouldn't know but "coming out" doesn't seem right.

I thought the acting and everything was pretty much way better than the other two that I've seen (Sorcerer's Stone and Goblet of Fire).

Emma Watson certainly has grown into her own acting-wise, but otherwise it just felt like.... one long setup for the next movie instead of something that could stand alone strong. $10.50 wasn't worth it. I thought the last three were better (while the first two, Sorcerers Stone and Chamber of Secrets, bored the crap out of me).

Alan Rickman is quite amazing tho, and he's in all of 'em. You don't really mind that he's supposed to be playing a character that's supposed to be 30 years younger.... because it's Alan Fucking Rickman.

i dunno man, i think it was effective at communicating a feeling, there was thematic content, plus it relates to right now.  ya know, living like things aren't totally hopeless, even though sometimes it feels like they are ? all that was enough for me  unsmith

I suppose if I had thought to view it that way I may have come away thinking better of it. Perhaps I'll give it another shot. After all, it wasn't BAD (certainly not as bad as the first two), just not worth $8.50 to me. I just felt it was so...... mediocre. It could have been SO much better, and after the last one my expectations were high since the story had more of an arc and more potential for dramatics. But I think it was underdone.

You may be on to something there. Now, I don't agree that it wasn't worth the price of the ticket, I have to agree that it was just as you said, one long set up. That's because the sixth book is just one long set-up. The majority of the book is exposition, the little lessons with Dumbledore. The things that keep you from falling asleep while reading the book are the social relationships and quidditch, the former having been portrayed quite well although of course not to the letter of the book, and the latter (having been down-played so much in the last few movies for various reasons) made a reappearance to good effect.

Also, there is one particular sequence of events in the movie that was changed dramatically, and I'm not sure it was a good idea, but I think I can understand the reasoning behind it. (would a spoiler warning here really be necessary?) In no particular order: a) a fight scene that is closer to the book would overshadow dumbledore's death onscreen. b)many of the characters have not been introduced well enough in the movies to devote time to them in a sequence like that. c)how many big, serious, dramatic fight scenes (against death eaters) could they possibly film at hogwarts before it stops being visually interesting? My guess is that they didn't want to gamble that the number was greater than one and saved it for later d) by not doing an all-out fight scene in the movie, they forced the exposition into prominence. The movie is forced to shove clues and information and set-up down the viewers' throat, while in the books there is far more space to tell the reader what they need to know subtly and to reinforce that information through subtle repetion. It's the whole lowest-common-denominator issue, but what's really sad is that what it basically means is that the powers that be had to dumb-down a children's book to make a suitable movie.

All in all, I'd say that they did a pretty good job with this movie. It had to be the hardest one to make so far, just thinking about how exactly to do the adaptation, and I think they hit a relatively good (grading on a curve here, guys) balance between representing the book as closely as possible and attempting to make a good movie. So yeah, I spent $10.50 on it, and I'm not too miffed. Then again, I've always been a little 'eh' about the HP movies. I'll see them in theaters, and I'll watch them if they're on TV and nothing else is on, but really if I wanna experience the story again, I'd rather just re-read.

To sum up: Dumbledore hot for that other genius wizard, Snape hot for Harry's mom, Ron hot for Hermione, Harry hot for best-friend's sister in what is not at all a hero-sex complex

ok, done book 7.

really glad i reread it. the first time through i just wanted to know what happened as soon as humanly possible, i  was really afraid of spoilers. i'd forgotten a lot about it, including one of the last chapters- where harry goes to king's cross to talk to dumbledore ? geez that was a good chapter- surprisingly insightful. ("you thought it, but that doesn't make it less real." "there are things in this world that are worse than dying." things that made me stop for a second and think, hm. that's right actually...) i think that chapter is what i'll bring up from now on, while talking to haters. it's got this odd, refreshing perspective on things like perception, death, and what it means to be alive. so good ! not just a kid's book,  i promise
