remember the old threads about music ? i miss those. they used to be the only threads i would post in. i'm always curious about what people are listening to. lately i'm a big fan of the silversun pickups. they remind me of a band me and adriel would've really liked in high school, haha, and you all know how i have that thing about nostalgia. as a matter of fact, i haven't been buying much new music lately, which is different cause for a while there i was buying at least one new album a week, sometimes more. i rediscovered feels by animal collective (i guess to get me thinking about them again, i'm seeing them in philly next week), and older radiohead is pretty fun (the bends is pretty sounding but a little rough around the edges, i think that's a good formula). one morning donovan came on xpn and my dad was all ohhh this reminds me of like 1968 and i was like oh yeah i have mellow yellow and he was like you do??? we made coffee and scrambled eggs and listened to the whole album, it was great. i need more of him probably. also been meaning to check out gomez, that will probably be my next purchase.

so yeah please share ! lists, stories, youtubes, reviews, crits, all are acceptable  Cool

i rediscovered feels by animal collective (i guess to get me thinking about them again, i'm seeing them in philly next week)

I'm jealous! I'm considering dishing out alot of money for a Lollapalooza ticket this summer just so I can see them (ofcourse there are other bands, but they're a priority.)
Merriweather Post Pavillion has tainted all other Animal Collective albums for me. It's been my musical crack lately, I'll just take hits of My Girls, Summertime Clothes, or No More Runnin' without even thinking about it. I tried to go back and listen to their earlier stuff, but I just got frustrated, because their latest effort is just so damn catchy. Strawberry Jam is doable, but I'll only go back and listen to certain songs at times. Its a blessing and a curse.

I decided to give Deerhoof a try. Going to art school and hearing student bands that weer influenced by Deerhoof (and they all were) turned me away from the idea. Listening to Offend Maggie, they're latest album, makes me tilt my head and ask "is this it?" its essentially lo-fi prog rock with a japanese woman singing nonsense over it (and she never, NEVER creates melodies of her own, always sings a guitar part.) The music is sometimes interesting, and I can appreciate the no-frills production, and they're certainly better than any of the MICA bands which they influenced. To be fair, I'll listen to some other works of theirs before I put them in the inconsequential bin.

Finally, my brother gave me some Earth, Wind and Fire. I'll be uploading some to the ftp because, holy shit. Don't write them off because of their disco hits, they're a funk band to the core, and a damn good one. The expert musicianship, plethora of sound textures, and quality production of their albums is a music listener's dream. Everything sounds crisp, the music is lively & fun, and each song is a beautiful display of 70s funk excess. You won't find any songs that don't discuss how strong love is, or how you should just get down and dance, they didn't try to break ground there. Good songs for good times.

Currently working my way through all of my Funkadelic CDs, and then on to the Sly and the Family Stone Collection I just got. Fuck yeah.

Eamonn! Get the O'Funk'illo album I put up on the FTP! It's got sick basswork, and I need someone to talk to about the album!!

Funnily enough I just listened to Sung Tongs yesterday. I still feel a little ehhh towards Animal Collective....seeing them live is the way to go.

yay animal collective ! i listen cause they make me feel more free. i love feels, i think i always will, but i feel really strongly about merriweather too. i think of all the new shit i've heard over the past few months, that album has made the biggest impression. rediscovering feels has got me thinking that maybe it will also make more sense later. (though it might just be that i'm starting to think that about everything.) oh well, animal collective stories after the show, i promise!

Kings of Leon's latest effort, Only by the Night, has been a puzzling thing. Their previous album was nearly perfect, and was a big step for the band, but still had elements of their dirty southern-rock sound. So it was hard to imagine them topping that, but when I heard singles like Crawl & Sex on Fire, I was very excited. The album's first track is kind of limp, its not bad, but its not stunning. Crawl comes in right in and smashes the dreary first song, its like the band wakes up. For the next four songs, the album flows pretty well, with Manhattan being the stand out tune to me. After that, the album goes limp again, with things you've heard KoL doing before, just not as well; songs about promiscuous girls, Caleb singing about his band, another song about sex...and the band just doesn't sound inspired. The last track, Cold Desert, is interesting to listen to, probably contains the lead singer's most honest lyrics to date.
The band has worked hard for its success, and grown steadily in some good ways, but its a shame they've hit the big time with this album, cause I feel like half of it are b-sides.

I've been listening to Maggot Brain for the past day or two. My favorite cuts are Hit it & Quit It, You and Your Folks, and Super Stupid so far. Its not necessarily a fluent album, but it does have some flashes of brilliance. There is, ofcourse, Hazel's Maggot Brain solo, which apparently was recorded in one take. The arpeggio in the background sounds like something from Radiohead's In Rainbows, adds some nice melancholy to the song.
Basswork is amazing, to be sure. I don't think they had Bootsy Collins in the band when they recorded Maggot Brain, so I'm anxious to see what he can do.

animal collective was last night and i thought they were marvelous. they sounded great, played songs i like, held my attention (noises in between, kept things interesting and unpredictable, songs would grow out of noise and gain momentum, anyone who's seen them knows what i'm talking about. they are really, really good at that trick.) their audience anticipates, freaks out, moves slower, follows along. the band decides, and that is one of the reasons i think they're good. they're among the few that could get me to agree to a crazy, chaotic, nonsensical adventure. i liked this show better than the strawberry jam one. there was more lights and visuals cause it was the electric factory and not some low-fi r5 show, but it didn't bother me. they weren't annoying or distracting, and sometimes i think the blinking lights added to the experience. made it more out of the ordinary and in the moment, which puts it further from just like listening to one of their cds in your car. it was also easier to dance at this show. i dunno, to me animal collective just seems to be in a different place right now ? in a good way. thus far that is the conclusion i've formed from merriweather. like they still let those noises and screams out but.. to me it just seems like they have a better idea of what they wanna do. like it's more direct or something. you still get to where they want you to go, but you don't have to wade through as much shit to get there. hm. maybe. anyway i love them, seeing them live is always an experience and always great, no regrets, would totally see them again

The AC show was great although they seemed exhausted as they crawled off stage after the encore.

The take on Leaf House was amazing - it was probably the most danceable song of the evening IMHO.  There's something about AC that makes me dance like without inhibition.

Okay, so, you all know that I'm not necessarily opposed to Animal Collective, it's just that I was never able to get into them outside of the concert venue. I fucking loved them live, I loved the energy, but for me the energy just didn't translate into CD form.

One of my colleagues here has been raving about Merriweather Post Pavilion since it came out, so a week or 2 ago I finally secured a copy. For the hell of it I got Strawberry Jam as well. I listened to Merriweather Post Pavilion and I really liked it. I don't think I can listen to it very actively, but it was a fine backdrop. While I was listening to it on iTunes, the track switched to Strawberry Jam, the next album alphabetically. I honestly didn't realize the album had changed, so I don't know what Pitchfork is talking about with their "ever-changing Ron Paul identity," but I can definitely see they've changed since Sung Tongs and I think it's for the better (although We Tigers still kicks). This morning as I was walking to school, I was in a bad mood. My morning music usually consists of hard rock or funk, but I wanted something to lift me up a bit and I was glad to have Animal Collective at hand.

mits that's awesome.

these days i'm a little obsessed with tilly and the wall. i resisted this band for ages for some reason, an would be like bridge you'd really like them and i was like hmm skeptical, but i finally listened and she was right. i love them. they remind me of dressy bessy, if anyone's ever heard of them. there's something about catchy, fun girlrock in the sunshine, that's like all i want right now

Over the last few months, my musical preference has taken a radical turn from mostly psychedelic noise and electronic music, straight into hip-hop. I think it had something to do with the only listenable radio stations in Baltimore being rap stations. Whatever the reason, I can't seem to get enough rap these days. I sort of feel like I've stumbled into this whole new world of music that everyone else has had access to for years, and I've just not been paying attention.
I've gotten my sticky hands on a shitload of Wu-Tang, a bit of the Roots and the Notorious BIG. So far, so good, but I know this is pretty much an entire culture of music that I'm just diving blindly into. I think I probably need some 2Pac and definitely some Busta Rhymes and NWA, but I'm basically a hip-hop infant. Anyone who's really into hip-hop have any suggestions where I should go from here? HINT: I love rap, but I can't stand R&B. I also want Ol' Dirty Bastard to come back from the dead, just so he can follow me around shouting rhymes/grunts.

Atmosphere. Get your hands on some Atmosphere. Also, since you're looking into NWA, get some solo Dr. Dre. Also, check out some of the hyphy shit out of San Fransisco, like "Tell Me When To Go" by E-40.

Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Jadakiss, any Ratatat hip hop remixes, Busta Rhymes is good, I dig on some of Ludacris, an my brother's big into Nas, though to be honest I'm still pretty new to Hip Hop and Rap, though I tend to like the more heavy shit

I'll upload some of my favorite rap songs onto spmusic in the near future.

i just discovered judas priest. i can't believe it. it's perfect studio music. i needed a new metal band to cling to, thin lizzy was getting old with the people around me.

i went camping with like 10 of my friends last weekend and the second night we were up there we the really drunk ones sat around trying to sing the entirety of "in the aeroplane over the sea" by neutral milk hotel.

because i am in wisconsin i am completely in love with bon iver, both for emma forever ago and the blood bath lp.

and, my first year of grad school will probably be forever defined by the smiths.
