http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/startrek/I gotta say it looks fun and shiny and kinda silly. I think Star Trek needs fun and shiny. Enterprise was the result of a group of execs taking the wrong things way too seriously and it sucked big time. Plus Sylar as Spock and Simon Pegg as Scotty? Fuck yes.

I think it looks exciting, but I've also never cared much about Star Trek one way or the other. v v

My official reaction to the trailer is I'm not sure I have one yet. In my most honest opinion, I think it could really go either way at this point. I am (of course) a hardcore fan of the franchise, but I totally agree that it needs to be re-imagined. Star Trek just could not go on the way it had been. It was a disgrace to all things Trek. But even with a new spin on it, it still needs to be recognizable as Star Trek. This is extremely important, because Star Trek is such an iconic thing. I mean, TOS and TNG were not just popular with ubernerds - they were full fledged cultural phenomenas that almost everybody liked! And if the movie is completely unlike what made those series (and imho DS9) great, then that would be a great disservice not just to existing fans of the series but to potential fans as well.
However, I trust Abrams, as I have said over and over again and I am remaining optimistic. And even what little we see from the trailer here, it does still LOOK like Trek. Just...shinier Trek. And that's okay. It's not the sixties so I would hope to god there aren't any push button computer panels on the Enterprise at this point. And I mean...Kirk looks like Kirk and Spock looks like Spock so that's good. I guess at this point, I want it to be good, I am just not entirely convinced. I need to see more.

Why do so many people "Trust" Abrams? Not saying he's done anything bad I just don't see how he's earned this blind trust from people just yet.
Anyway, the movie looks cool. I was never a big Star Trek guy but I can still feel nostalgic for certain things. In the first trailer it was when just a little bit of the theme started to play. For the new trailer its when the "Red Alert!" sirens go off.

Because I've liked pretty much every movie of his that I've seen. And I mean the one's he's written, in addition to the ones he's directed. I can't really comment on his TV record because I don't watch Lost, but to my understanding Alias was pretty good, and Fringe looks neat. Also he's been around a lot longer than I think you think he has been, Nick. Check out his imdb, you might be surprised what you find there. Like Forever Young. That's right, remember that movie? With fuckin' Mel Gibson? Well guess who wrote it? That's right, our man Abrams.

I'm definitely agreeing that it'd be silly to call this awesome and perfect now that we have a new longer trailer. But I do definitely like what I see so far. I think one of the reasons I loved DS9 so much was it wasn't at all sterile, the scenes were always alive and vibrant, either because of the locations or the characters or both. Those brief snips of character interaction give me that kind of feel.

Affirmed. What ever happened to, I guess, the crazy-looking Star Trek aliens? Like the Klingons? And for that matter, how can you make a Star Trek movie without Klingons?

Back in the original series Klingons just looked like normal dudes who dressed weird. They sort of tried to explain why they became black and all fore heady later but it never made too much sense.
But I'm pretty sure that guy we see sitting down at the end of a trailer is a Klingon.

What ever happened to, I guess, the crazy-looking Star Trek aliens? Like the Klingons? And for that matter, how can you make a Star Trek movie without Klingons? Because depending on what they do with the timeline, the only aliens humans could have come in contact with at this point could be Vulcans. They were the first race to make contact with us originally. Back in the original series Klingons just looked like normal dudes who dressed weird. They sort of tried to explain why they became black and all fore heady later but it never made too much sense.
But I'm pretty sure that guy we see sitting down at the end of a trailer is a Klingon. Also they totally looked like greasy evil Hispanic drug runners, but that's besides the point. And they only tried to explain it in Enterprise, which was stupid, because every fan knew that the real reason was just that they couldn't afford the make up to make Klingons look they way they wanted until TNG. The canon explanation up to Enterprise was simply "We do not like to talk about it" (Worf, Trials and Tribbalations, DS9) which was explanation enough for the fans. It was sort of like a big in-joke that we all got. Then Enterprise ruined it, like so many other things. I did not see that guy, I'll have to look again.

This is the honest to god Enterprise explination, which I only post out of a desire to share my torment.
The grandfather of the scientist that invented and built Data (Look! It's Brent Spiner! PLEASE WATCH OUR SHOW!), was a geneticist who created the superhumans that Kahn was a part of. He had a batch of these ready to go and got them to steal a Klingon ship to use so they could go off and be left alone while he made more meathead vaguely British superpeople.
The Klingons were amazed that a few humans could take down one of their crews, so they got some of the blood of the vaguely British superpeople, or stole one of them, or something else retarded. They then went to the trouble of splicing this superDNA into some of their own solders to make them super and vaguely British. The side effect was the splicers looked like greasy evil Hispanic drug runners.
This conflicts with so much established information it's hilariously terrible.

...Nick you are NEVER allowed to make fun of people for complaining about something they loved getting ruined by someone or something. You are the KING of this. Let's just make that clear from here on out. Kay? And also, Rick Berman ruined my Star Trek. Star Trek was just an innocent victim. But I'm pretty sure that guy we see sitting down at the end of a trailer is a Klingon. The guy with all the tattoos? No way. Romulan is more likely, given the Vulcan-esque features of pointed ears and slanted eyebrows. And that's only if its even a preexisting Trek alien, which it looks like its not. edit: Okay I just checked IMDB and that character's name is Nero (and played by Eric Bana) which almost DEFINITELY makes him a Romulan. And let me just add, if he IS a Romulan, that is a stupid fucking looking Romulan. http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0033306/

Here are some plot details that have come out so SPOILERS!
Nero isn't just a Romulan bad guy, he's a TIME TRAVELING Romulan bad guy. He fucks with the timeline so that Kirk's parent's ship gets destroyed, forcing him to live with an abusive uncle. The theory goes that by changing Kirk's upbringing, he's no longer the history defining icon he was, thus presumably helping the bad guys accomplish something Not Good.
This has the side effect of being a canon explaination for why Kirk is a frat boy douchebag in this movie, doing things like spying on certain ladies in their quarters and whatnot.
People are guessing this is also the reason Old Spock is in the movie, he's gone back to try and help Kirk grow up to the still womanizing but not total peverted douchebag we all know and love instead of Alternate Super Douche Kirk.

God DAMN that is stupid. A prequel with an alternate time line? But he is J.J. Abrams and he did some writing for Armageddon so I will trust him
