THIS IS OF COURSE assuming that the movies end up being excellent and not total insults to the original text.

1. Dune by Frank Herbert : can someone PLEASE do a good rendition of this for the love of god??
2. Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke :The only drawback to this one would be the intense depression that'd hit viewers afterwards
3. Ender's game and then Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card :Make it two movies, 8 hours total, I don't care this would be awesome
4. Cryptonomiconby Neal Stephenson :this would just kick ass until there was nothing left but meaty chunks of ass
5. American Gods by Neil Gaiman : Incredibly hard to do right but it'd be pretty sweet I think.

Ender's Game would ONLY be done right if it had the right level of "darkness" to it. I say Guillermo Del Toro would do it well given his dark R-rated "children's" movies The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth.

Anyway, in answerto the OPs question:

5. Guests Of The Ayatolla by Mark Bowden (nonfiction)
4. 102 Minutes by Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn (nonfiction) (If Paul Greengrass could approach it the same way he did with United 93 it would be phenominal)
3. Duel by Thomas Fleming (nonfiction)
2. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King
1. Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill

As usual, my numbers don't really imply any sort of ranking.

1. Spot of Bother, by Mark Haddon.  This would be pretty easy to do well, I think.  It would make for a wildly entertaining "tragicomedy."
2. Cat's Cradle, by Kurt Vonnegut.  I'm always wary of movies based on Vonnegut books (the three I've seen have all been awful) because so much of what makes Vonnegut great is his narration.  I think the premise of Cat's Cradle is strong enough to make a solid movie even if some of the narrative brilliance is sacrificed.
3. Ham on Rye, by Charles Bukowski.  This one also seems pretty easy.  The casting would have to be perfect, though.
4. Straight Man, by Richard Russo.  I haven't actually finished this book yet, but it is very entertaining and it seems like it would make a good movie.  Although, a lot of the laughs come from narration.  I guess well-placed voice-overs could take care of that, though.
5. Candide, by Voltaire.  I was looking at my bookshelf and I realized that most of my favorite books already have been made into movies, so this was added sort of on a whim.  I think it would be difficult to do well, but if it were done well, it would be a great film.
