I played with it a bit last night myself, and I have to say its really taken away my fears of trying to run a linux box. I'm thinking for me the hardest part will be stripping the dell I have now (I want NO remnants of Windows on there it all possible) and starting from scratch. Ubuntu itself is a very streamlined interface with what appears to be a minimal learning curve as far as using the actual OS is concerned.

Also, her laptop came preinstalled with Firefox and Pidgin, which I thought was just plain neato.

It's fine. I used to use Trillian, which I like better, but Pidgin is pretty easy. Zero learning curve, which is pretty much how i feel about the rest of the stuff. I was all scared and worried that i wouldn't get it. Turns out this OS and all of the applications for it make more sense to me than Vista and the newest version of office.  Smiley

Question: Why did you do the switch to linux? Or do you use it in conjunction with your current OS?

I considered it briefly for the sake of graphics, but decided against it.

I switched because I was so sick of windows. I contemplated switching to a mac, but then i just kinda realized that they're both the same shit. With Linux, I can make it work the way I think, instead of thinking the way windows or a mac works. It's pretty much infinitely customizable, and everything i could possibly want to do with it is free. I don't have to pay a million dollars for every upgrade or new version of whatever. And, I don't have to worry about viruses and spy-ware because no one makes them for linux. Also, because i was getting a new computer at the same time as contemplating the big switch, I found a way to take the scary out of making my drivers and whatnot compatible...I got my new laptop with Ubuntu preinstalled. Plus, the graphics are pretty sexy. I just updated it to the latest stable distro, Hardy Heron...took all of 20 minutes...now I'm gonna play around with some sweet-looking GNOME themes...I'll do a screen shot later.
