I have been wanting to make the switch to a Linux machine for a while. I'm currently shopping around for a new laptop, and I found out that Dell offers premade customizable machines that run Ubuntu. However, I've also been advised that Ubuntu might not be the best version for a first-time Linux user. The appeal, though, is that I can get my laptop with Linux already installed and therefore avoid the hassle of having to strip Windows from it or deal with dual booting to run a different OS.
Can anyone corroborate what I've heard as far as Ubuntu not being a good interface for a beginner? Any other suggestions as to what I could use, or has anyone heard of another company that would offer a different release already installed on their machines?
(Carly-post-interjection: Evan, I'm pretty much looking to you here. My friend Mary has decided she wants to do this on a laptop as opposed to a desktop since she really has no need for the latter but is sick to death of windows. THE PRESSURE IS ON YOU!!!)

Come on guys! I know I interjected and asked Evan to help out on this one, but since Evan seems to have fallen off the face the planet and I KNOW that there are other Linux users on this board (DAN), I am a little dissapointed that nobody is being helpful! How is this anyway to welcome new members to the boards, I ask you!

You know what? It's really not a big deal. I can get advice elsewhere. I don't want to wait around too long before my dad rescinds his offer to pay for it. Carly, don't worry about it. I'm sure these guys have much more important things to write about, like ridiculous cars with fabric skins that will never be marketable, ever.

I'm sure Evan would be pleased with the appropriate level of creepiness implied in that statement, Dan. Good work.

*doublethumbs up* I'm sorry! My life has been consumed by World of Warcraft and finding a job so I can keep being consumed by World of Warcraft! Ubuntu is a really nice variant of Linux, and as far as I know it's the only one that's being sold commercially preinstalled. It's pretty easy to do things like surf and check email and whatnot, and it's pretty much the best place to start if you want to learn about Linux. But you're going to have to be prepared for a learning curve and asking for help from time to time. My experience with Ubuntu was reasonably good, aside from a few hiccups and some fairly serious issues that I had in regards to the old hardware I was using. But you shouldn't have to worry about it if you're buying a machine with it preinstalled. Another good thing is you'll be able to shop around for different Linux variants if you're not happy Ubuntu. Most Linux distros have premade installations for popular laptop models so there aren't any problems with finding drivers and whatnot. I'd say jump in head first, there's plenty of people to help keep you above water.

Have you got a problem with that?

Thanks for that! I had pretty much assumed that there would be a learning curve, but that most of the problems that other people have when trying out linux are the type you mentioned. A pre-installed version shouldn't have any of those. So with that encouragement, I'll tell my dad what kind of laptop I want. Again, thanks!
