I bought the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router (WRT54G for those so inclined) a few days ago and I have to say this is the best piece of civilian networking equipment I've ever used. Having cut my networking tech teeth on Cisco midrange rackmount business and direct backbone routers I really couldn't stand the D-Link model I had, it would consistently restart itself for no valid reason, die during high volume remote connection traffic (Torrents) and had the most juvenile configuration setup I've ever seen.

The 4G though cost just as much ($50, local Circuit City) has a fantastic interface that lets me easily change and configure anything I need to, and even lets me use the Cisco terminal interface, damn near identical to the one that I had to learn for my CCNA. Also it seems to have autosensing overflow protection, which is really making my life a hell of a lot easier. My old setup would routinely lockup completely and bring the entire network down if I had a torrent downloading at anywhere near or over 100K/sec for any length of time, now the network locks up for a second or two and comes right back without a single identifiable break in service.

And goddamn, having port forwarding that actually fucking Works is comforting as hell, now that I don't have to leave my machine more open than an old french whore to get things done.

I love threads like this, please post more.

I'm running a Micro$oft 5 -port wired router (I know, but it was free) with a Linksys 5-port switch.

I have no complaints about either, but the most extensiveuse they get is  three or four torrents or uploading a few mp3's.

Steve recently told me to always go with Netgear, as Linksys is shit. I've been errorless. Why could this be?

My family uses Linksys and never had a huge problem.   What makes them shit exactly?

I'm not sure exactly. I've also heard they're hit or miss and some people have completely awful experiences with them. So it may be that you can sometimes get a dud.

Honestly, I've never used Netgear aside from some cheapass 5 port hub I bought for a couple bucks, so if indeed they do make Linksys stuff look like shit, it's news to me.
