I like Jobs' explanation for the lack of CD/DVD drive. "Who needs a CD/DVD drive when you can just download music and video while simultaneously making me richer!?"

Yeah, it's a brilliant marketing plan, if it works.
Personally, I'd just use it to illegally download stuff.
Rifty? Dan? Any comments?

Actually, you can use any computer that has a CD drive on your network ( http://www.apple.com/macbookair/wireless.html). The reason there's no CD drive is that the MacBook Air wouldn't be the MacBook Air. The drive would increase the thickness by at least a half inch, negating the "Air" part. It's just Apple trying to upgrade the laptop paradigm (got rid of floppy drives, modem ports, friction-based charger connectors) and force the market to follow suit. It doesn't always work, but it seems Apple is envisioning the wireless world right now. I don't necessarily agree (how do you install the OS if you're not a mega nerd like me with lots of toys and work arounds?) with this decision, but only time can tell. I'm not a huge fan of this laptop (mostly because of its price) but I am impressed that they're offering the solid state storage option. Like most Apple products, it's expensive because they're doing it first. In two years when your Dell can fit in an envelope, but then spontaneously catches on fire, you'll still hate Apple because they made the iFood, but it can only make vegetable based food.

How are you supposed to install software or games? Other than illegally, I mean.

I guess they're assuming most people buying the Macbook Air are going to be big-time nerds who actually have networks. I mean, if I get a laptop (or upgrade to a better laptop), the sole reason is so that I don't have to deal with a desktop (or an old laptop, for that matter). This is basically saying that you need two computers to install anything (until the e-revolution catches up, that is).
I can't dig that.

I don't know many people besides nerds who actually install things onto their computers from CDs truth be told. Most users are perfectly peachy with the software that comes with the computer (especially in the case of macs) so who knows, maybe it'll catch on.
I'm shaking my fists at the thing for being smaller and at least AS powerful as my custom Macbook, but also at the end of the day it is pretty durn cool.

Yeah, Apple really plays to the cool factor. Dell could really take a hint in that department; the only "cool" Dells I can think of are Alienware, but those are expensive (moreso than the MacBook Air, I think. Plus, only insane gaming nerds buy those). In any case, I'd rather go for the 160GB hard drive of a regular MacBook.
Also, I predict the use of songs from Talkie Walkie or Moon Safari for TV ads.
Also, 1500th post.

It's damn sexy, but it almost seems like it's too soon for what it wants to be you know?
Basically, it's targeting a world with pervasive high speed wireless and multiple computers, which I just don't think is the norm now. I think families have multiple computers that might be all "Hooked to the interwebs" by the Comcast guy. This seems like it might be just a bit too progressive and things have to catch up.
But I'm not gonna fault it, I think it's going in the right direction and it's a really really nice piece of hardware. Love the SSD option (Not so much the additional 1.3K to pay for it though). All in all I'd have to say it's a nice look at the future from Apple.

I feel like this is going to be a little like the G4 cube - a cool idea, but ultimately not a keeper. I don't buy computers based off of how small or thin or novel it is. I feel like this computer being so small it'd bend or break under small loads of weight. I'm looking forward to the Macs that are like big iphones - a giant touchscreen.

It's really for the user who has a separate desktop and just needs another machine for mobile use. I'm thinking of pawning my MacBook for an iMac and just buying the MacBook Air with the hard drive...then throwing in an SSD when they get cheaper. The MacBook 13.3" display is way too small for main computer and I'm not too fond of the white look anymore...and it's severely lacking in the video department...
