@ Dave - what about it did you like? It was just one horrible depressing situation after another, with no real conclusion.

@ Eamonn - Thats another movie I haven't seen, and don't plan on seeing. I got maybe 30 pages into the book then got really bored :/  ... I take it from your post that the movie wasn't too hot either?

I think it did an excellent job of pointing out the injustices different groups are currently dealt around the world while placing the blame largely on human nature, rather than pointing fingers at a specific group, like white people. There is no real resolution because human nature is an inescapable reality, and the unfortunate things that happened in the movie continue to happen every day, unresolved.

I haven't seen it, but why does "depressing" mean "bad?" I understand why a boring movie would be bad, but can't a depressing movie be good?

Perhaps I just wasn't in the right mood for it, perhaps it just wasn't something I'm interested in, but it was just like scene after scene of how much it sucks to be human over and over again. While there were some nice shots cinematically I felt very detached from the characters because half the time I couldn't understand them (though I suppose that was the point, right?) and because there were so many story lines it switched around between them so quickly I felt as though as I was just getting into one story line it swapped for another.  As a result it became a slide show of depressing, tragic events for these people ... "Life Sucks. Life really sucks."

I dunno that doesn't particularly interest me.

Depressing movies can be good, I never said they can't - Requiem for A Dream was incredible. I got attached to the characters in requiem which makes their troubles more tragic. All the while you're thinking "maybe this'll get better, maybe things will get fixed" wheras in Babel all i could think was "Lets see what's going to happen next thats going to make their situation worse"
