I'd say one of the most well known bands of the 80's
They're just so incredibly rad also chock full of sexual imagrey - "Take me down where the love honey flows" this totally went over my head when I was a kid
and not to mention great musicians ... its hard to sound so much like the original song onstage, which they do exceptionally, with great stage prescence. I felt it was only fair to start this thread with The B-52's

While yesterday I focused on some of the more amazing music from the 80's today's kidney stones might be faily hard to pass. If you'e a fan of 80's movies as much as I am, you might recognize this music video from the hit theory of relativity inspired sci-fi kids movie featuring the voice of pewee herman, Flight of the Navigator.
Blancmange, a short lived, wretched band managed to pass this kidney stone, entitled "Lose Your Love." lets watch: :barf:I'm speechless. I've been trying to interpret it for years but I still can't figure out if they're gay, or just in a threesome with some poor girl who said "I've had enough of this pathetic shit"
In contrast to Blancmange's shitty music, my next kidney stone has, in my opinion, pretty awesome music. Though the music video is an abstract, homoerotic, nonsensical assault on the rods and cones of my retinas, its a significant moment in the mid 80's somehow. Lets watch "We Close Our Eyes" Most people know Go West for their memorable song "King of Wishful Thinking," but "We Close our Eyes" was their first hit, the song that got them a record deal in the first place. What the hell, though is this crap with the huge wrench? How does that relate to mannequins? As with most videos I'm left confused and anxious, as though they've shown me something I shouldn't have seen. Great song though.

That Go West Song is really fucking great. Probably my favorite one so far. The chorus gets me. It's just prime for a house remix

today's post is themed around makes people want to forget about the 80's These three women are such good musicians that they perform with pre-recorded music, while lip synching so that they can perform horrible dance moves on stage. l can't help but be reminded of Sparkle Motion from the movie Donnie Darko ... or cheerleaders 'dancing' at 'talent shows' in highschool. I'm sure we all remember the theme to The Neverending Story, which was done by a man who calls himself Limahl, Mark Hamill. I'm not sure but I think that he's got possibly the worst haircut of the entire 80's performers. Its like a mullet fucked a porcupine in a puddle of hydrogen peroxide ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P6I4pT_tVA&eAlso his music is repulsive and unforutunately catchy. "Limahl's" career plummetted after this and the neverending story song. Thank god. I notice in 80's videos, particularly of thsoe with the lesser artists who are less musicians and more performers with synths and drum machines the video rarely has the "musician" playing anything - see "we close our eyes" (though the singer there was the drummer, while the guitarists was the keyboardist as well) here though, they have their own band. therefore the video must surely show them playing for a crowd, because they're musiciansnext time I'll post something decent, I swear1

The second one doesn't work, and I wish the same were true for the first. Holy God. First of all, what was that show? And why do all musical showcases from the eighties look like the Running Man? I kept waiting for the camera to cut to some post-apocalyptic bums warming their hands over a neo-barrel fire, while watching the performance on a telescreen in the middle of a megaslum. Bum 1: "Hey, get a load of that gigabit!" Bum 2: "Yeah, I'd like to downgrade her controller port!" Bum 1: "What?" 17 Year Old Future Revolutionary: "WE'VE GOT TO STOP THIS TRANSMISSION, AND TAKE DOWN ULTRACORP!" Did that girl really think she was lipsyncing? I mean, there are parts where the camera is completely focused on her face and lyrics are boppin' along in the song, and she just has a that vapid grin going. Maybe all that hair spray was seeping into her brain. Also, I like the girl on the far right. She looks like she dipped her hair in canola oil before she came on stage. Some one must of told her it's sexy when your hair looks like a greasy icicle.

Added the youtube link below the youtube ... hopefully that'll work
Today's 80's stone begins with one particular artist who I feel is worthy of note. While his videos are for the most part relatively boring it it worth mentioning that while most artists of the 80's concentrated on multiple layers of synthesizers, Winwood was a talented muscian who could play just about every instrument from drums to mandolin, Sax to Synth, and play them well. This video is pretty classic abstract 80's, visually, while less pop-ish musically speaking.
I'll also bring up another God of the 80's, which is of course, Tears For Fears, which is a band that is towards the top of my list of favorite musicians. Unfortunately I was unable to find a video of the song I wanted to show, but I'll upload the mp3 and put that up later on in this topic. So instead here's a classic that everyone knows, or at least I should hope the know. Eamonn says the key behind this song is the Bass. I'd say though, that the song's structure and pacing in addition to the excellent basswork are what make this song. I'm not sure I've found a Tears for Fears song that I dislike ... even the stuff they're making now that they're back together is pretty good.
Next stone's gonna be a painfully good one, I think

Man. Ok. So that first video, I never knew the name of that fucking song. Now I know who did it. As far as the poppiness of that song, I'd have to disagree and say it is very poppy. The chorus is hummable and the lyrics are discernible. The buzzy keys are reminiscent of late 70's early 80's corporate rock (see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQiJdf-ebIs ). The Tears For Fears video was awesome. I had never actually watched the video. From the other room Ethan bitched about something to do with Donnie Darko, but he probably still listens to Jimmy Eat World, so fuck him. My opinion on why that song is so good has to be the chord progressions. Truly a sign of instinctive musicianship. MORE!

I'm so glad the Cold War is over. Hopefully no more music like these videos will be made. First video:- I feel bad for people in the future who have grand parents who like this stuff. When that time comes, "Grandpa is a douchebag" will be a popular thing to say. - I didn't know seagulls could sing. - I wish the camera crew had left them on Piano Drum Log Cabin Island. To starve. Although they could prbably eat their leather jump suits and stay alive for a while. - The helicopter pilot that did this shoot probably committed suicde after. Unfortunately, he didn't do it by crashing into the band. Second VideoDynamic Frontman: "We need to be deep." Pompous Lead Guitartist: "But we aren't. We usually write songs about sugar babies. Or sugar. Or our babies. Or sometimes we write about the love we have for our sugar babies." Dynamic Frontman: "No, I know. But we have to look deep." Pompous Lead Guitarist: "Oohhhhhh. OK, well get stock footage from all major social events in the second half of the twentieth century. Now, some vomit inducing lyrics." Dynamic Frontman: "How about 'Did you ever think that we could be so close, like brothers? The future's in the air, I can feel it everywhere, blowing with the wind of change '?" Pompous Lead Guitarist: "That's perfect!" [Throws up in mouth a little] Dynamic Frontman: "Ok, now you should make your guitar sound as gay as possible." Pompous Lead Guitarist: "Like if Mark Knopfler was a retard?" Dynamic Frontman: "No... much gayer." Pompous Lead Guitarist: "Like this?" [Strokes guitar neck like a penis] Dynamic Frontman: "Yes, exactly! Also, I'm going to whistle!" Pompous Lead Guitarist: "FUCK YES!"

A bit of a departure from the standard 80's feel, while still quite 80's in nature. In actuality it was released in 1993, but in Algeria which is like 10 years behind anyway. I still think it Kicks immeasurable ass ... I still can't quite figure out what the fuck is going on here, aside from knowing its some wonderful allegory of life. Khaled is a favorite artist of mine ... who would think to mix Far East traditional sounds with jazz and pop? If you've watched "The Fifth Element" as much as I have, then you'll surely know his other song Alech Taadi which was featured in the chase scene at the early part of the movie.
Another group that doesn't follow the standard 80's pop feel that many of the songs I've posted, and will continue to post, are The Pogues who set the bar for Irish Folk/Rock/Something. The Dropkick Murphys ... and virtually every other "irish" whatever band draw heavily, and sometimes almost exclusively from the Pogues. And they all pale in comparison. If you like what you see here look into the album "If I should Fall from Grace with God" - its a wonderful album

First off let me say that the bass MAKES the Tears for Fears song. Its fucking perfect. So we've seen some of the premier artists from the 80s, but what about the 70s groups? What did they do in the 80s? Did they keel over and die? Some of them did, some of them didn't. Some tried to change.
They tried and died.
My example of this is Wishbone Ash. They were one of the best bands from the 70s IMO. If you dont know about em, check them out. They actually still tour today, and put on an a great show. Anyway, here is their mid 80s attempt to change with the times (they got a new, awful vocalist, dumbed down their song structure, and got rid of any traces of what they had been known for).

M'kay eamonn, if you look at the title for this thread, it says "Bryce's daily 80's kidney stone", and while yes, the music video you posted completely sucked ass like a couple of the ones I posted, this isn't "Eamonn's Daily Wishbone Ash Jerkoff woot woot hooray for the 70's," thread.
As with Cinderella and the Scorpions, I don't think these need much introduction. I give you ... Baltimora! and everyone's favorite ... Men Without Hats!

WHAT
This video walks the fine line of bad and good. If he was taking himself seriously in that video, it would be really shitty. Instead he dances around a may pole.
