The idea that everyone should be equal under the law means that everyone should have the same rights, not that someone who excels over everyone else is somehow violating the law. If Superman rapes a nun, he should have the same rights as a retarded, deformed homeless man who also rapes a nun.

I don't see how your reply is at all linked to mine. I'm saying that having a truly egalitarian mindset precludes the existence of "heroes" (or people we look up to), because we won't think that anyone is "better." I'm not saying excelling is against the law, I'm saying that a truly egalitarian society will not recognize excelling as exceptional. The very notion of "exceptional" is inherently inegalitarian because it is a way of saying "you are better than this other person." Not recognizing/promoting exceptional qualities is bad.

I think you're talking about something else.

No one is "better." Give me any one person in the world and given the right circumstances and resources I could make them more famous than davey crocket.

If no one is better, there are no heroes.

No one is "better."

Doesn't that mean there is no "good"? That would seem rather troubling.

Sure, and that's the good of heroes. They awaken people to the realization that they can achieve great things. Without heroes, there is no knowledge of "better."

I'm confused. Are you saying that people who never achieve anything that society deems noteworthy are bad people?

Not necessarily. If "what society deems noteworthy" happens to be good, then yes, I would say that. If you are not achieving "good" (assuming you're capable of achieving that good, that is) then I think it makes sense to say you are "bad."

Okay, great. But you still haven't told us how we decide what is good and what isn't; so far you're just talking about fascism.

Go back to page 2 of the debate. I answered that question:

"In brief, we think about it."

There are only so many ways I can rephrase myself. I think once we get to the point where one side starts accusing the other of fascism (actually, I suppose that happened a while ago), that's a good point to stop.
