Ok so this is really another attempt to reach the illusive Ethan Perry. This is a final sketch for an illo from his story. Boy I'd love to read more of this story, Ethan. And illustrate it! But it should turn out to be a good piece. This is the "king of the world" character, lying down in a filthy mix of vomit and something else, watching leaves reattach themselves to trees, along with bits of garbage. Pittsburgh looms in the background (might be visiting it soon). Will show the final, when its done.
Buuuuuuuuuuuuuut the internet at my school is very confused, so I will upload an image later tonight.

HERE WE GO
-----
Years before his suicide, the king of the world lay nearly unconscious on the broken sidewalk of Forbes Avenue. It was a Sunday in late autumn – the Steelers had already started another undefeated season, which would unsurprisingly end with another championship win. David, who couldn’t quite lift his head out of a pool of stale smelling black water on a cold morning, already knew it would happen. He knew because he wanted it to happen.
A dead leaf rolled towards him, coming to rest upon his bloody check for only a second before passing over his face towards the nearest tree. Reluctantly, David turned his tired eyes to watch it, and saw for the first time the row of barren saplings along the sidewalk. He coughed for a moment and began to throw up. All the leaves along Forbes Avenue rolled in towards him, as if pushed by breezes from all directions towards a new center of the Universe, leaping and springing along and dancing onto the dead branches above his head where, carefully attaching themselves back to their old homes, regained their colors and fluttered with a familiar sense of life. Silently all of the saplings, dark and pitiful from steel mill smoke and acid rain, regained all of their lost children, whose new zest for life hid their bleakness beneath a cloak of virility and color. Soon pieces of litter – scraps of newspaper, old voting ballots, discarded condom wrappers – noticed the exodus of their cousins, and threw themselves into the parade, dancing over David and leaping onto the branches above him, coloring the once barren sapling all manners of beautiful pale, white, and brown. The leaves were soon outnumbered, and for years to come whenever a small breeze blew through that particular row of trees, the street filled with the rustle not of foliage, but of ripped and torn scraps of paper and cardboard and plastic. From his bed of vomit and cold black liquid, David watched catatonically until the last scraps of paper on the street has leapt up to the branches. He knew that the saplings would never again appear bleak or puny, and though the occasional leaf poked through the canopy of garbage, nothing would ever fall from a branch on these trees again. He knew that even the busiest senators and roughest union boys would pause on their way to read scraps of newspaper dangling from low hanging branches. And he knew that while no one really had time to investigate or experiment with what happened or how, everyone would agree that the saplings on Forbes Avenue were the most beautiful trees in Pittsburgh. David knew all of this because a nagging, uncontrollable, and amazingly small part of him wanted it that way. He rolled over, facing away from the pool of his own vomit, and if he was not mistaken, blood, soaking the other side of his face in the black puddle he had used for a pillow the night before, and began to sob. Beneath branches of refuse and a smoky autumn sky, the king of the world couldn’t stop crying.

This sentence took me a couple of reads to figure out. Maybe try splitting it into two simple ones. Also: David watched catatonically until the last scraps of paper on the street has leapt up to the branches. o_O Otherwise I really like it. I'm glad you made the garbage turn into garbage leaves rather than regular leaves. Regular ones would've been all gay and Green Peacey.

hey eamles i can't help but feel you were a little silly in wanting to illustrate a story he hasn't written yet, that he wants to write while doing the rest of his senior year, the busiest year we've all faced yet..... no offence dawg(s)......... i just think it might've been better to pick a story that's already done (but hasn't been done)..... and maybe switch ideas before its too late........ you can't do that much about how fast our darling ethan writes....... if at all while he's got all the rest of his junk to worry about.... and knowing that the culmination of your thesis is riding on him finishing is also a little stressful on top of all the other stuff. ;_; if you just want me to shut up i can do that

Jeez dont I feel like an idiot. I was under the impression he had it finished, or atleast close. Not to say that I didnt have a growing fear in the back of mind the past few days, but whatever. Well, its still possible I think. Whitney Sherman might not be very pleased to hear this, though. But if he can just send me bits and pieces I can atleast do the illos while hes writing/correcting. If only I could actually TALK to the guy.

What kind of schedual are you on with this guy? Does he want to see it all done before you start, or what? Sorry if that fucks you up, but I could have sworn you said it was okay if you just drew as I wrote.
Also sorry I didn't have anything for you yesterday, its been a busy week - I'm gonna be able to sit down tonight and tomorrow morning and make some headway, but again, what kind of schedual are you on here?

Eamonn, I make a much better haggard dying face than you IMHO.
I hope this works out though, because at this point I would totally buy this book.

I hope this works out though, because at this point I would totally buy this book. I didn't want to make either of our faces, although it did come out looking like it. I agree with your haggard face comment too. But dont worry dave, you will defenitely be a star model for these illos. In fact I will need your services very soon.... Glad to hear some one will buy this thing.
