Recently my good friend Jamie Miller posted a video on YouTube as part of some debate their hosting. His question?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt3AkZ1ID0w

In the video, he doesn't even go so far as to mention the number of times (at least 5 to the best of my recollection) that his family has almost been deported, their visa's not renewed, or any other number of hardships they've faced simply because they followed the rules and worked with the system. The video's also gotten a write up on KYW's website, and Jamie's been contacted by a company doing a documentary on immigration. His situation is the driving force behind my opinion on illegal immigration, and why I feel illegals should have to go through much stricter and more difficult means to obtain citizenship. Your thoughts?

I think the problem with the strict-on-illegals approach is that we're confusing the goals of illegals. I don't think their goal is primarily to become a US citizen. Rather, it is to make US money. If that can be achieved without becoming a citizen, then why become a citizen? That's why I think the whole "illegals can pay a fine and then get on the road to citizenship" idea is terrible.

The problem is that it is too easy for illegals to get jobs and make money. If that is made harder through imposing stricter punishments on employers, for instance, then I think we could encourage more illegals to actually desire to make the effort to become citizens. As long as they can get jobs as illegals, they won't jump through hoops or pay fines to become citizens.
