With an external hard drive, a mouse, a printer, a jump drive, and a PS2 controller adapter and only two USB drives, I have begun to think about USB hubs. Are there any pros and cons of buying these? And for that matter, do they need a power source or do they activate by themselves when connected to a USB port?

Tanks.

There are a few different kinds of USB hubs, for different general things.
The first and most basic is just a little unpowered hub,  these work when plugged into your machine and can't really power USB devices all that well. They work fine for jumpdrives and mice, but external drives of any sort will either not work or be slow.

The second is a powered USB hub, which aside from plugging into your machine has a seperate power adapter. These can power USB devices just as well as your machine can, actually better since they don't have to draw on your internal power supply, and that's an issue for laptops and people that redline their PSU's with six drives and fans and shit.

These two types also have speed variants. There's two different speeds of USB, USB 1.1, which is pretty slow and not good for external drives cause you'll sit there forever, and USB 2.0 which is a good deal faster. Generally I'd look for a hub that is powered and says it supports USB2.0, that way you won't run into any issues.

Looked a bit at NewEgg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817392005

This one looks the best out of all availiable, has the best reviews and is only $5    dollars more than the competition. The only complaints about it are a bunch of fucking nerds saying "OH GOD IT'S SO BRIGHT HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO SLEEP AND GET READY FOR MY WOW RAID MY GUILD IS GOING TO BE SO MAD!"

Also this would look pretty nice with your external HD and current Dell laptop.  Cool

Yeesh, I never thought of computers as things that commanded aesthetic value.

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions and lowdown, Dan and Rifty. I will look into that USB hub some more. I like that it can be powered by either the computer's power source or its own.

As for peoples' qualms with the light...I can always use a lighthouse in my room. Har har har.

I have this bad boy...

... and it's treated me well. I don't remember paying that much for it, though. Given the price, I'd go with Dan's suggestion.

For the record, I never said Dell's look good, I'm just trying to make the best out of a bad situation.

*fixed Cool

I wouldn't say it's a bad situation...I'm pretty satisfied with my Dell. Of course, I talk of switching to Macs, but that's moreso out of want than displeasure with Dell.

Which leads me to ask, why is there an aversion to Dells among the general public (that is, people who are computer-literate)? I've never quite understood it.

I didn't mean to say it's not appropriate for your needs, I just think it's a bit ugly.

Most people dislike Dell for their usage of very shitty parts and horrible customer service. Also, they can't seem to make an attractive computer. I have no idea who their designer is, but he's stuck in 1999 and needs Doc to get him back.

I'm wondering the same thing. I've owned exclusively Dells for six or seven years now, and I've always had good experiences.

It's what Dan said, the shitty components and ohgodyouhavenoclueIlosttenhoursofmylifefuckingindia customer service. Those of us who actually work in the PC repair sector hate Dells with a passion unrivaled by anything in the known universe. The reason is simple.

They're the only things that come in.

Ever.

And whenever anything goes wrong and you need to order a replacement part, you Will be on the phone for two hours with five people who can't be understood or understand you. Do that for a few days and you really dislike Dells. Do it for a summer, and you will want to kill everyone in the company personally with a rusted knife

One of the other problems that I have with Dell is that they obviously cater to people who have no clue what they need in a fucking computer. Seriously, a 4ghz processor with 256 megs of ram? You've gotta be kidding me!

This is on top of the things that others have mentioned, which I won't repeat.

I kind of have a problem with getting mad at people simply for their ignorance about how a computer works. Now if that person is apssing themselves off as a tech-supporter or what have you, fine: fuck them with verbal abuse and what have you. But don't penalize people just becuase they aren't as tech-savy as you. I get being mad at Dell for taking advantage of people like me (I do not own a Dell). But don't take it out on their victims.

Edit: On re-reading the above post, however, it seems I may have misread your intent. Allow me to beg for forgiveness: sorry, dude.

No problem at all. That's what I mean....oftentimes, "my computer is slow" means 'I need more RAM,' or "I need a real graphics card instead of intel integrated."

These people just buy another Dell instead of getting an upgrade, and Dell cripples thier machines so this happens.

Steve's got it exactly. We're not angry at the non tech savvy, we're angry at Dell for fleecing them and producing intentionally flawed hardware configurations. Since these people never really get a chance to understand why something's not working the way it should, it becomes a vicious cycle that just aids Dell's bottom line
