So, I just started torrenting via Demonoid and I'm guessing that since the site lists a download to upload ratio, I'm guessing that one has to keep that ratio fairly balanced. In order to upload, do I just leave the client (in my case, uTorrent/MicroTorrent) open with the files open?

When something you download hits 100% you'll see the status switch to Seeding. A little down the line you'll see a column called Ratio. As long as things you download have a ratio of 1.000 or higher before you stop them, you'll have a positive Demonoid ratio and won't get into trouble. You don't have to do this all at once, like leaving something up for days just trying to get to 1, it's cumuliative for all your torrents.

So say you're downloading three Demonoid torrents, and just for simplicity they're all 100 megabytes. Two of them are seeding fine, but the third has nobody downloading it so there's no one to upload to. If you seeded the other two to 1.5 (150 megabytes) Demonoid will see 300 MB downloaded 300 MB uploaded and you'll have a ratio of 1.00.

Generally I try to seed to 1.5 on everything just to have a bit of a buffer in case I can't seed something in paticular. Maybe seeing my profile'll help make it clearer, as it'll show my ratio. I use TemporalRift as my membername there

What kind of trouble can you get into? Will they take away your membership?

My ratio hovered around .8 for a long time (but now it's up to 1.01), and I never got any sort of notice of impending doom.

My ratio is getting too low, am I going to be banned?
The site automatically bans users who have low ratios.  We give plenty of time for users to get their ratios up before the automatic banning.  However, if you are receiving the ban warning, it would be best to quickly resolve it.
Either seed torrent's you download, or upload your own to distribute.
A second possible way to evade automatic banning, is to donate.  $5.00US donor's ratios are throttled to 1.0 for the duration of the donor period (1 month).  As for the amount of time or ratio number it takes to automatically banned, will not be disclosed.  This is to prevent abuse of the banning system

Yeah I've only heard people getting banned for ratios of .6 or below, but I've got no real experience with it, I usually forget about smaller torrents, and when I come back they have ratios of like 5.3 or something so I've never gotten to the cutoff

That's one of the things I love about Demonoid, it's so diverse I can find practically anything I'd actually look for. It's not so good for the derivitive emo crap my sister wants to find though.

Thanks guys. So far I've gotten the movie Yojimbo and am awaiting the completion of the Simpsons Season 9.  Now I just need to circumvent my 2GB upload/download per week limit :frown:

Ach, now I have another question. What is the difference between downloading a torrent with an HTTP tracker and downloading a torrent with an UDP tracker?

I'm probably the last guy that should be offering suggestions about computers and downloading and stuff, but a friend of mine here at Pitt mentioned something about getting around a downloading problem in the dorms by using a certain torrent program that has encripted code. I don't remember the name of the program, or if its even applicable, but does this ring any bells with anyone?

Ooooohh, this sounds tantalizing.  My current battle plan is to use various WiFi hotspots around campus, since wireless internet usage doesn't count towards the 2GB limit.  It works out nicely, since I find that I get more work done when I'm not in my room, so I can study and torrent simultaneously.

I've heard encrypting your torrent traffic can sometimes fool ISP's and get past bandwidth caps, but I don't know anything about it, I'm sure a quick Google search can give you an idea of how it's done.

The difference between the two is complicated in practice, but can be simplified in explanation.

An HTTP tracker involves a lot of measures to make sure your torrent has high data integrity. Basically, all of the files you're downloading will be garunteed in tact and uncorupt. This makes for a slightly slower download rate as each part of the file includes a section that verifies that it came to you correctly.

UDP is a little more bare bones and will not definitely ensure that each file is in one piece. It will, however, be a bit faster.
