for my costume class, we have an open assignment every once and while, which basically means you get to do whatever you want and call it a costume (we've currently got a lot of "pretty dress" type costumes in the works right now).
for the last big costume we did, some girl designed a cheshire cat get-up (and didn't finish it but who cares), and i was inspired by it and wanted to do my own sort of thing, but more monstrous.
also i really really wanted to build that mask.
