I am simultaneously amused and horrified.

hey, new question here. Can anyone recommend a site where I can download something to let me play .wmv files without having to worry about viruses?

Worry about viruses?   I don't understand why wmv's would pose a risk for viruses.

You can just have Windows Media player on your Mac.  Also Dan posted a link to Flip4Mac which'll do the trick.

yeah..viruses. Oy still thinking in the past. But now, with the flip4mac player in, it still won't let me play the .wmv, saying: this is not a movie file.

Nah, I've just never encountered viruses from wmv's.   I suppose they do exist though.

Do you actually have Window's Media Player downloaded and installed on your computer as well as Flip4Mac?

Fuck WMV Player. That shit it totally wack on OS X, just like every other fucking Microsoft app on OS X. I'd say stick with Flip4Mac.

speaking of which...I just downloaded some Kenshin but the format is in .avi and quicktime says I can't watch it. Is VNC a good .avi player for the mac? Can anyone recommend a good one?

(I know I asked this question a little while back, but that was a whole 'nother computer ago)

That's a codec issue, which after some digging I managed to find the appropriate pack for OSX. It seems really odd that Mac users don't have a well known unified codec set, I guess you guys just don't pirate movies or something.

Yeah VLC'll work because it uses its own integrated set of video and audio codecs that are really specifically coded. That's why VLC "Plays Everything".

The codec pack on the other hand, will add support for those differing video types systemwide. It really comes down to prefrence. But if you're going to be watching things with subtitles or more than one audio track, I think VLC might be your only choice. I haven't heard of other programs with the requisite support to switch video and audio layers for the Mac.

(seems like I'm making a lot of these posts...)

I just downloaded some comics via the interweb and they are in a .rar format. Anyone have a good program for that? On my old laptop I used win.rar but now I have a mac and am even more clueless.

Should do the trick. I use Stuffit, but that isn't free. So you're free to obtain that. but this will be much easier to get.
