Tonight's season premiere reeked of suck. I don't mean suck as in the episode kind of sucked, I mean suck as in if there were a golf ball and a garden hose, this episode could suck the golf ball through the garden hose.

The episode was touted as "featuring Metallica as special guests." Metallica being one of my favorite bands, I was naturally excited. Well, the band was on the show...for about 2 minutes. Their premise for being on the show was some completely farfetched concept that only a writer who is plum out of ideas (see: writers for The Simpsons) could come up with. Their tour bus broke down and Otto, being without music for once, stopped to offer the band a ride. Bart immediately steals the bus (which, if you know anything about The Simpsons, wouldn't happen, for Bart is a big fan of hard rock and metal as well) and drives off. The band then appears in the back of a truck and drives off while playing "Master of Puppets." Can you say "cameo equals paycheck?"

The rest of the episode was the usual bunch of garbage we've all come to expect from modern Simpsons eras (and much to my dismay, featured no more Metallica). After 18 seasons, it's really time to call it quits.

Wasn't it something about Homer joining the mob?

Simpsons really stopped being funny about 5 years ago.   I remember a period of denile where I would force laughter for all their jokes, but the fakeness of it all eventually caught up with me.

Homer didn't join the mob, he and Bart filled in for Fat Tony who had been shot.

Watching The Simpsons used to be a ritual for me. Sundays were extra special because they were new episodes. But, like you guys, I got sick of it and stopped watching the show for a long period of time. This is the first new episode I've seen in a really long time. I can't even bring myself to force laughter. The material is just flat out not funny anymore.

One small thing to say in favor of tonight's episode though, was a reference made to season three. Bart and Homer, being affiliated with the mob, can be seen with various weapons. At one point, Bart has a board with a nail through it, which as we all know, is what drove the aliens off in the "Monkey's Paw" short from season 3's Treehouse of Horror. It's a clever reference, I have to admit. It's no saving grace for the episode, but hey, at least the show hasn't gone overboard with making references to itself like Family Guy.

I hope this level of awfulness doesn't occur to Futurama when it comes back.

Groening still writes for Futurama, so we shouldn't have that problem, should we?

Groening only writes the comics these days but has final veto power over everything else.   That's why Futurama is all Computer Science jokes.   It's written by all these sci-fi computer science nerds that produced the Simpsons.

I think now The Simpsons might manage a few gem gags a season compared to a few gem episodes awhile back and a solid sustained display ten years ago,  I really hope the movie just endcaps the enterprise, it really needs to be let go.

Have you got a problem with that?

That being said, I have yet to see an episode of Futurama that I didn't love, and I'm next to positive that I've seen every one.

I have all four seasons on DVD, it's one of my all time favorite shows and I can always pop in a disc and instantly enjoy whatever comes on.   The humour has just the right ammount of subtley to not treat the audience like they're retarded (ie Family Guy) and sometimes make you cry like a little girl.

I don't think I've had as much emotional reaction to a cartoon, hell even to a TV show in general, than during that episode.

The Law of Futurama: Emotional momments are more meaningful when you don't see them coming.
