I need to install a devicer driver for a PCI card on one of my older computers. WTF? I honestly have no clue what that means so I hope someone here can instruct me.

What is the device? I can help you find the driver if you tell me what it is.

Ok, a PCI device is one of the slot loading cards on the back of your computer. For example, many people use a PCI Ethernet card instead of onboard ethernet. Many sound cards are PCI. When you look on the back of the computer you'll see the ends of these cards: they lie together parallel to eachother. Look at all of them and note their function. Then right click on My Computer and hit Properties. Go to the hardware tab. Click on Device manager. The Device that requires a driver will have a black question mark with a yellow circle next to it. If the description of the device is still too vague to tell, note which cards are showing up in Device Manager and which aren't. When you figure out which card is not working, let us know and we'll find you a driver.

Yeah, unless you can tell us what the PCI card does finding a driver will be basically impossible. If you can't figure it out with Device Manager (Highly possible, Windows might not be able to tell what the thing is without a driver) you're going to have to take it out and look at it, you'll be able to tell what it is quickly that way, it's always written on the PCB

Well I looked in back and I couldn't find any such cards or slots. Dan, you said to go into my computer and check it out from there. The problem is that everytime I try to access My Computer I get an error. It tells me that explorer is having problems. However, it will let me access the control panel. I'll see what I can do. Also, I am working with Windows 98. I don't know if that will change anything or not.

Back up any important data. Find Reinstallation discs. Insert into CD drive. Restart computer. Follow instructions on screen to reinstall OS. This will wipe all data on the drive, hence the backing up. Let Windows do its thing. New computer!

Well even if there was data I wanted to back up, I couldn't. It won't let me access My Computer or My Documents. So lets just go for it. Thanks Dan and Rifty.

Do you have a digital camera to take pictures with? Or are you anywhere close to Dan or Steve? This is one of those things that really needs to be done by sight, since you don't know what you're looking at or for (No offense intended)

Joe, I'll fix your computer if you drop it off at my place. All you need to do is pay me in a thread with lots of pictures. I mean a lot. Twenty plus. That a fair deal?

I just restored the hard drive to its orignal settings. However, it no longer recognizes my usb mouse(it doesn't have a standard mouse port.) Dan, I'll bring it by when you are free and you will have your thread of pictures. What do you want them to be of?

That's your decision. Also: Dan: yes but think of all the other shit that's wrong with a win98 machine Dan: i saw that as an opportunity to fix all of his problems at once Evan: After he formats he Still won't have a driver for that card, and probally a lot of other hardware, SE didn't come with a huge driver database like 2000 and XP did Evan: He's gonna need some experienced help
Rifty called it.

Nah, Dan said he'd take care of it, it won't take long to deal with either.
Dan, check the CPU clockspeed on that machine. If it's above 300 and you can get half a gig of RAM in there somehow, it'll run XP fine with all the graphical bits turned off, and this won't happen again.

Go for it, buddy.
So, the RAM'll end up costing ~$50-60. How's that sound?
