This is actually a selfish thread. I want to find more instrumental music to listen to while studying. I can't read/study to music with words. It confuses my one-track mind.

1. Bela Fleck/ Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
2. Steve Howe's solo work
3. Stanley Clarke/ Return to Forever
4. Jaco Pastorius/ Weather Report

That's it for me except for a couple of "Bluegrass tribute to..." and "Symphonic tribute to..." type things.

Help! And show how cultured you are at the same time!

2. John Paul Jones
3. Joe Satriani
4. Stevie Ray Vaughan
5. ..... uhhhh.....

Mahavishnu Orchestra

Have you ever listened to any of Billy Cobham (the Orchestra's drummer)'s side project? It's got the insanity of Mahavishnu, with a dabble of funk for a...casserole...of awesome.

I've downloaded two of his albums (A Funky Side of Things and Spectrum), but I haven't gotten around to listening to them yet. I'll do that right now...

Edit: I listened to the album "A Funky Side of Things," and I really enjoyed it. Usually I'm pretty wary of funk. But the funk was pretty subtle when it was combined with all that jazz and what not. Good listening, indeed.

I love that drum battle. My drum teacher showed me that a few years back. It's from a memorial concert for Buddy Rich, which also featured an awesome drum battle between Gregg Bissonette (studio drummer), Louie Bellson (Duke Ellington) and Dennis Chambers (formerly of PFunk, now Santana).

Dave Weckl is all about cool phrases, and Vinnie Colaiuta is all about speed and technique, but man, only Gadd can play in the pocket. Dave and Vinnie were doing cool stuff, but only Gadd was making cool sounds.

And if anyone's interested, this is what Dennis Chambers is capable of.

The cowbell groove sent me right to Steely Dan's "Aja," where he plays (and solos!). Cool
