I can play guitar, mandolin, and bass. I WISH I could play:

5. Lute (because it's cool)
4. Saxophone (i played in Elementary School but I wouldn't be able to now)
3. Trumpet
2. Piano

and:
1. Drums

I settled for guitar. I have ALWAYS wanted to play the drums, and I have always respected what drummers do (except for Meg White... who sucks).

No real order, because really the order varies on my mood or what music I'm listening to at the time.

Violin - I guess techinically I more want to learn the fiddle, for bluegrass and celtic music purposes, but whatever
Mandolin - just QUOTE THIS POST AND CALL ME A CUNT its fucking badass
Bass - either electric or upright, whatever, it's all kickass
Guitar - I took lessons a long time ago and I actually know a few chords, but I'd love to be good at it

Piano - this is probably the only one I always want to know above all others.  It just seems like the perfect asset to any musician or singer.  I wish I could have pestered my parents in to getting me lessons when I was young enough for them to really make a difference.

1. Piano - Learning
2. Guitar - Learning
3. Drums - Want to learn
4. Saxophone - I love the tone of a saxophone. Overall, reed instruments are some of my favorite when it comes to jazz solos. The artist can bleed into notes very gradually, and the vibration technique used to create the sound makes for an amazing timber. I'll probably never learn this one.
5. Analog electronics - This is a broad one. Also, the learning curve isn't as steep as all you need to play them are fingers and a good ear. I put it so low because  there isn't so much learning as there is tinkering with finding the right sound. Examples of this are the Moog synthesizer, and basically every knobby switchy hardware toy that nerd musicians use. Software sound creation just can't compete with analog hardware stuff. A good blog on this type of stuff is http://musicthing.blogspot.com/

How's that going for you? I tried to learn the piano/keyboard, but I got really really frustrated. I would love to be able to play, but it seems like an awful lot of commitment. I think I'll end up sticking with guitar and bass and daydream of playing all these others.

I just tinker. I started to follow the lessons on pianonanny.com, which were free and pretty good, but I got pretty bored quick. I hope to be mostly self taught. I think I'll be able to do this because of an obsession to know what works and what doesn't. The whole "I wish I had learned as a kid" is a legend I think. If you have the drive to want to learn something then it really shouldn't matter how old you are, and you may even learn faster as an adult as a result of greater discipline, will power and resources. But I am at the very bottom rung. I know that if you press keys they make noise, and I know how to read music.

But having the drive to learn something absolutely foreign is the reason you're posting on the server sitting in my parent's house. When I commited to shifting SP over to the new server I had no idea what the fuck I was doing. That must be reassuring to all of you![/i]

I guess I want playing instruments to be a stress/boredom reliever. I'm sure if I got good enough, playing piano could work well in that role, but taking the time to get there is both stressful and boring, which seems to run counter to the whole point.

Plus, I have very little discipline when it comes to this sort of thing. If I wanted to actually become a good guitarist/bassist, I'm sure there are plenty of exercises I could do. But, I prefer to learn really easy songs and just tinker. But, there's a lot to be said for tinkering, I think.

Carly, you reminded me that I, too, want to play the mandolin. Maybe I'll just stick with string instruments. If I can play two, I'm sure it can't be that hard to learn a few more.
