Why not!?

1. Southern Rock (The Band, The Allman Bros, CCR, etc.)
2. Progressive Rock (Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, etc.)
3. Folk (CSNY, Bob Dylan, etc.)
4. Hard Rock (Led Zeppelin, The Who, etc.)
5. British Invasion (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, etc.)

And for good measure:

6. Psychadelic (Earlier Floyd, Grateful Dead, Cream, etc.)

I do realize that some of these overlap. For instance, The Dead did a lot of folk-y stuff, and The Beatles did some Psychadelic stuff. Oh well!

Actually, I learned in my American Music class that Dylan helped jump-start the folk rock movement by playing an electric guitar at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.

And bah! to you, Flyntz.

1) Progressive
2) "Hard Rock"
3) Southern Rock
4) Rock n' Roll (ala Chuck Berry)
5) Surf Rock

yeah he did, but he hates when people say that. He doesn't like the term folk rock, and once in an interview he said the following

Reporter_do you think you will continue to play the style of folk rock?

Dylan_I don't play folk rock

so yeah he'd still be pissed if he heard someone call his music that

...

I called it "folk," not "folk rock," but now that I think about it, Dylan did play folk rock. He blended folk music and rock music. Last time I checked, that's called "folk rock." Dylan is just a douche bag snob. He always has been and he always will be. He's getting mad at his fans for calling his music what it actually is. Does that make any sense to anyone? The guy played good music (good folk rock music, that is), but he's a big asshole.

hey don't shoot the messenger, and if calling it folk is the case it is not a sub genre

folk is its own genre that exhisted before rock. folk rock is a sub genre of rock (although both genres sound great and are appreciated by my ears)

Garage Rock
Rockabilly
Hard Rock
Psychadelia
Southern Rock

Classic Rock seems way too broad. It's basically anything "rock" after Rock n' Roll and anything "rock" before the 80's.

Some people include the 80's in Classic Rock, which I think is stupid. Sometimes 102.9 will do a "Class of 19__" and play songs from that year, and I've had the unfortunate luck of tuning in when it was "Class of 1985."

I think your definition is good, though.

According to my history of rock class and my text book, The Band and CCR are actually "Country Rock" and Southern Rock is a deviation of thst genre. Now honestly I don't care but since a few of us took rock/blues courses of the previous semesters I was just wondering what anyone else's class had categorized those bands as?(I'm really tired right now so if my spelling or grammar is fucked, forgive me.)
