Superlative Super Bowl Stories - Part 1

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

I would have to say Bears all the way, but for different reasons than most people. I haven’t told this story to that many people…but I think it’s something I can finally come to terms with here…in the warm, loving cradle that is the Spacepiratesltd forums…

Many moons ago, on a road called the Pennsylvania interstate, I was driving with my favorite teddy bear…who I called Buddy. (more…)

Album Review: DJ Spooky vs. Dave Lombardo - Drums of Death

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Several months ago, I learned of this album’s existence during one of my many trips to Wikipedia.org. I was astonished to find that Dave Lombardo, one of the finest drummers to ever grace the double bass, had worked on a hip-hop album. (more…)

Concerning The Nature of Dirt and Dreams

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

Life, in all of its majesty, comes from dirt. A dark, solitary expanse of nothing that surrounds all the complexities of the world. When humans die they rot, lie alone surrounded by earth, and eventually turn into dirt – surely it is not too much of a stretch then to assume that at some point mankind and dirt were at least made from the same stuff. It is not the miniscule nutrients and minerals within the dirt that we must concentrate on however, but rather the bleakness of it. Dan’s Pick of the Week 01/11/07

Air: French Band have been a staple of my music catologue since their record label debut “Moon Safari” in 1998. I have and would strongly recomend any of their releases to anyone, no matter what their musical tastes are. Their next album “Pocket Symphony” is due this February and looks to be interesting as they’ve learned how to use traditional Japanese instruments and will be including them on various tracks along with their usual collection of electronic and rock instrumentation.

Recently, I stumbled upon a nice collection of live Air tracks, which was pretty surprising and incredibly good. One of their more well known songs is “Sexy Boy.” This video is of them performing a very different and funkier take on the song along with the band Phoenix. Instead of having the straight forward 4/4 distorted blast that’s found on “Moon Safari,” they put more emphasis on the percussive side of things and turn the song more danceable. It’s almost as if they extracted the skeleton of both “Sexy Boy” and “Funky Town” and made an unstopable groove robot.
